TagsInput

Install: npm install @mantine/core@9.7.1 @mantine/hooks@9.7.1

Version and compatibility

Pinned Mantine Core 9.7.1 requires React and React DOM ^19.2.0 and matching @mantine/hooks@9.7.1, from the installed npm package's peerDependencies. Do not force it into React 18 or another incompatible version. Explain upgrade impact and agree on a plan with the project owner; do not hide conflicts with --force/--legacy-peer-deps. The native Provider enables theme.respectReducedMotion and uses forceColorScheme for light/dark.

Use case

Enter multiple free-text tags with suggestions.

Native props used by this example

These props are extracted from the local typechecked JSX and grouped by their owning native component. This is not an exhaustive prop list; see pinned source signatures and inheritance below.

Component propExplanation
TagsInput.disabledDisable user input/action; not equivalent to readOnly.
TagsInput.errorLocal error display; it does not run validation by itself.
TagsInput.readOnlyPrevent editing while preserving the read-only interaction.
TagsInput.labelVisible label or component-specific label content.
TagsInput.dataLocal options/nodes; keep unique values and native schema.
TagsInput.defaultValueInitial uncontrolled value, not a live controlled update.

Interaction and state checks

Current scenarios: Default, Disabled, Invalid, Read only. Check actual behavior after selecting supported disabled/error/read-only scenarios; components without those native states do not receive invented universal props. Verify keyboard focus and exits, then connect changed values through the native callback signature.

Business integration boundary

Allows free text; it is not equivalent to MultiSelect's constrained option selection.

Host setup

Install pinned @mantine/core and @mantine/hooks, import @mantine/core/styles.css at the entry and use MantineProvider. The example's theme/variant are JGuang-authored host props, not universal native component APIs; forceColorScheme synchronizes the app theme. Native implementation source is a reading reference: use npm exports rather than copying internal engines. This batch covers Core, not dates/charts/forms extension packages. Detailed upstream prose remains English.

Runnable usage

import { useState } from 'react';
import * as M from '@mantine/core';
import '@mantine/core/styles.css';

const fruit = ["Apple", "Banana", "Orange"];
function ComponentPreview({ variant = 'Default' }: { variant?: string }) {
const disabled = variant === "Disabled";
const invalid = variant === "Invalid";
const readOnly = variant === "Read only";
return <M.TagsInput disabled={disabled} error={invalid ? "Add a tag / 请添加标签" : undefined} readOnly={readOnly} label="Tags" data={fruit} defaultValue={["React"]} />;
}
export default function Example({ variant = 'Default', theme = 'light' }: { variant?: string; theme?: 'light' | 'dark' }) {
return <M.MantineProvider forceColorScheme={theme} theme={{ respectReducedMotion: true }}><ComponentPreview variant={variant} /></M.MantineProvider>;
}

Preview states

Default, Disabled, Invalid, Read only

The example uses the native Mantine API. For supported input demos, change the local variant to Disabled, Invalid or Read only; these are example labels, not new component props. Keep the documented data, controlled values, stores and compound children when adapting the example.

Usage

TagsInput provides a way to enter multiple values. It can be used with suggestions or without them. TagsInput is similar to MultiSelect, but it allows entering custom values.

Loading state

Set loading prop to display a loading indicator. By default, the loader is displayed on the right side of the input. You can change the position with the loadingPosition prop to 'left' or 'right'. This is useful for async operations like API calls, searches, or validations:

Controlled

The TagsInput value must be an array of strings; other types are not supported. The onChange function is called with an array of strings as a single argument.

import { useState } from 'react';
import { TagsInput } from '@mantine/core';

function Demo() {
  const [value, setValue] = useState<string[]>([]);
  return <TagsInput data={[]} value={value} onChange={setValue} />;
}

Controlled search value

You can control the search value with searchValue and onSearchChange props:

import { useState } from 'react';
import { TagsInput } from '@mantine/core';

function Demo() {
  const [searchValue, setSearchValue] = useState('');
  return (
    <TagsInput
      searchValue={searchValue}
      onSearchChange={setSearchValue}
      data={[]}
    />
  );
}

Clearable

Set the clearable prop to display the clear button in the right section. The button is not displayed when:

  • The component does not have a value
  • The component is disabled
  • The component is read only

Max selected values

You can limit the number of selected values with the maxTags prop. This will not allow adding more values once the limit is reached.

Accept value on blur

By default, if the user types a value and blurs the input, the value is added to the list. You can change this behavior by setting acceptValueOnBlur to false. In this case, the value is added only when the user presses Enter or clicks on a suggestion.

Allow duplicates

By default, TagsInput does not allow adding duplicate values, but you can change this behavior by setting the allowDuplicates prop. A value is considered duplicate if it is already present in the value array, regardless of the case and trailing whitespace.

isDuplicate

You can use the isDuplicate prop to control how duplicates are detected. It is a function that receives two arguments: tag value and current tags. The function must return true if the value is a duplicate.

Example of using isDuplicate to allow using the same value with different casing:

Split chars

By default, TagsInput splits values by comma (,), you can change this behavior by setting splitChars prop to an array of strings. All values from splitChars cannot be included in the final value. Values are also split on paste.

Example of splitting by ,, | and space:

With suggestions

TagsInput can be used with suggestions, it will render suggestions list under input and allow to select suggestions with keyboard or mouse. Note that user is not limited to suggestions, it is still possible to enter custom values. If you want to allow values only from suggestions, use MultiSelect component instead.

Sort options

By default, options are sorted by their position in the data array. You can change this behavior with filter function:

Fuzzy search with fuse.js

You can implement fuzzy search using the fuse.js library to match options even with typos or partial matches:

renderOption

renderOption callback allows you to customize option rendering. It is called with option object. The function must return a React node.

Pill customization

renderPill callback allows customizing how pills are rendered. It is called with an object containing option (combobox item), value (string), onRemove (function) and disabled. Note that since TagsInput allows adding custom values, option property might be generated on the fly.

Reorder pills

Set the withPillsReorder prop to allow reordering pills. Dropping a pill before or after another pill updates the component value accordingly. Reordering is automatically disabled when disabled or readOnly is set.

You can reorder pills with a mouse (drag-and-drop) or keyboard:

  • Pills are not part of the Tab order. With focus on the input, press ArrowLeft (when the caret is at the start of the input) to move focus to the last pill.
  • ArrowLeft and ArrowRight move focus between pills (RTL-aware). Pressing ArrowRight on the last pill returns focus to the input.
  • Alt + ArrowLeft and Alt + ArrowRight reorder the focused pill (RTL-aware).

Focus follows the moved pill so multiple moves can be chained without re-focusing.

If you use a custom pill renderer with the renderPill prop, spread the reorderProps from the render callback payload onto the focusable pill root element to keep reordering working. reorderProps carries the tabIndex, data-mantine-pill-index attribute and the keyboard handler that drive keyboard reorder, so it must land on the element the user can focus:

import { TagsInput } from '@mantine/core';

function Demo() {
  return (
    <TagsInput
      withPillsReorder
      renderPill={({ value, onRemove, reorderProps }) => (
        <div {...reorderProps}>
          {value} <button onClick={onRemove}>×</button>
        </div>
      )}
    />
  );
}

Scrollable dropdown

By default, the options list is wrapped with ScrollArea.Autosize. You can control dropdown max-height with maxDropdownHeight prop if you do not change the default settings.

If you want to use native scrollbars, set withScrollArea={false}. Note that in this case, you will need to change dropdown styles with Styles API.

Fit dropdown to viewport height

Set floatingHeight="viewport" to make the dropdown grow to fill the available vertical space in the viewport. The flip middleware is disabled in this mode – the dropdown always opens in the configured direction and is constrained to the viewport edges instead of flipping to the other side. Useful when working with large option lists:

Group options

Disabled options

When option is disabled, it cannot be selected and is ignored in keyboard navigation. Note that user can still enter disabled option as a value. If you want to prohibit certain values, use controlled component and filter them out in onChange function.

Inside Popover

To use TagsInput inside popover, you need to set withinPortal: false:

Control dropdown opened state

You can control dropdown opened state with dropdownOpened prop. Additionally, you can use onDropdownClose and onDropdownOpen to listen to dropdown opened state changes.

By default, the dropdown is displayed below the input if there is enough space; otherwise it is displayed above the input. You can change this behavior by setting position and middlewares props, which are passed down to the underlying Popover component.

Example of dropdown that is always displayed above the input:

By default, dropdown animations are disabled. To enable them, you can set transitionProps, which will be passed down to the underlying Transition component.

To change dropdown width, set width prop in comboboxProps. By default, dropdown width is equal to the input width.

Input props

Read only

Set readOnly to make the input read only. When readOnly is set, TagsInput will not show suggestions and will not call onChange function.

Disabled

Set disabled to disable the input. When disabled is set, user cannot interact with the input and TagsInput will not show suggestions.

Error state

Success state

To set aria-label on the clear button, use clearButtonProps. Note that it is required only when clearable is set.

import { TagsInput } from '@mantine/core';

function Demo() {
  return (
    <TagsInput
      data={[]}
      clearable
      clearButtonProps={{
        'aria-label': 'Clear input',
      }}
    />
  );
}

Source-backed parameter reference

Implementation signatures and types are generated from the pinned local source. Optional props, native inherited types, union branches and never exclusions are preserved. A forwardRef implementation's ref is a React reference, not an additional business prop.
