SegmentedControl
Install: npm install @mantine/core@9.7.1 @mantine/hooks@9.7.1
Version and compatibility
Pinned Mantine Core 9.7.1 requires React and React DOM ^19.2.0 and matching @mantine/hooks@9.7.1, from the installed npm package's peerDependencies. Do not force it into React 18 or another incompatible version. Explain upgrade impact and agree on a plan with the project owner; do not hide conflicts with --force/--legacy-peer-deps. The native Provider enables theme.respectReducedMotion and uses forceColorScheme for light/dark.
Use case
Choose one value through adjacent segments.
Native props used by this example
These props are extracted from the local typechecked JSX and grouped by their owning native component. This is not an exhaustive prop list; see pinned source signatures and inheritance below.
| Component prop | Explanation |
|---|---|
SegmentedControl.data | Local options/nodes; keep unique values and native schema. |
Interaction and state checks
Current scenarios: Default. Check actual behavior after selecting supported disabled/error/read-only scenarios; components without those native states do not receive invented universal props. Verify keyboard focus and exits, then connect changed values through the native callback signature.
Business integration boundary
Demo content/state is local, without server persistence, authorization or fetching. A static display component is not a completed business workflow.
Host setup
Install pinned @mantine/core and @mantine/hooks, import @mantine/core/styles.css at the entry and use MantineProvider. The example's theme/variant are JGuang-authored host props, not universal native component APIs; forceColorScheme synchronizes the app theme. Native implementation source is a reading reference: use npm exports rather than copying internal engines. This batch covers Core, not dates/charts/forms extension packages. Detailed upstream prose remains English.
Runnable usage
import { useState } from 'react';
import * as M from '@mantine/core';
import '@mantine/core/styles.css';
const fruit = ["Apple", "Banana", "Orange"];
function ComponentPreview({ variant = 'Default' }: { variant?: string }) {
return <M.SegmentedControl data={fruit} />;
}
export default function Example({ variant = 'Default', theme = 'light' }: { variant?: string; theme?: 'light' | 'dark' }) {
return <M.MantineProvider forceColorScheme={theme} theme={{ respectReducedMotion: true }}><ComponentPreview variant={variant} /></M.MantineProvider>;
}
Preview states
Default
The example uses the native Mantine API. For supported input demos, change the local variant to Disabled, Invalid or Read only; these are example labels, not new component props. Keep the documented data, controlled values, stores and compound children when adapting the example.
Usage
Controlled
import { useState } from 'react';
import { SegmentedControl } from '@mantine/core';
function Demo() {
const [value, setValue] = useState('react');
return (
<SegmentedControl
value={value}
onChange={setValue}
data={[
{ label: 'React', value: 'react' },
{ label: 'Angular', value: 'ng' },
{ label: 'Vue', value: 'vue' },
{ label: 'Svelte', value: 'svelte' },
]}
/>
);
}
Uncontrolled
SegmentedControl can be used with uncontrolled forms the same way as a native input element.
Set the name attribute to include segmented control value in FormData object on form submission.
To control the initial value in uncontrolled forms, use the defaultValue prop.
Example usage of uncontrolled SegmentedControl with FormData:
import { SegmentedControl } from '@mantine/core';
function Demo() {
return (
<form
onSubmit={(event) => {
event.preventDefault();
const formData = new FormData(event.currentTarget);
console.log('Segmented control value:', formData.get('framework'));
}}
>
<SegmentedControl
name="framework"
defaultValue="react"
data={[
{ label: 'React', value: 'react' },
{ label: 'Angular', value: 'ng' },
{ label: 'Vue', value: 'vue' },
{ label: 'Svelte', value: 'svelte' },
]}
/>
<button type="submit">Submit</button>
</form>
);
}
Data prop
SegmentedControl supports two different data formats:
- An array of primitive values – used when
valueandlabelare the same - An array of objects – used when
valueandlabelare different
import { SegmentedControl } from '@mantine/core';
function ArrayOfStrings() {
return (
<SegmentedControl data={['React', 'Angular', 'Svelte', 'Vue']} />
);
}
function ArrayOfObjects() {
return (
<SegmentedControl
data={[
{ value: 'React', label: 'React' },
{ value: 'Angular', label: 'Angular' },
{ value: 'Svelte', label: 'Svelte' },
{ value: 'Vue', label: 'Vue' },
]}
/>
);
}
Generic value type
SegmentedControl supports generic value type. You can pass primitive values (numbers, strings, boolean, null)
as the type argument. The generic type is used for value, defaultValue, onChange and data props.
Example with strings union:
import { SegmentedControl } from '@mantine/core';
function Demo() {
return (
<SegmentedControl<'orange' | 'grape' | 'apple'>
data={[
{ value: 'orange', label: 'Orange' },
{ value: 'grape', label: 'Grape' },
{ value: 'apple', label: 'Apple' },
]}
/>
);
}
Disabled
To disable a SegmentedControl item, use the array of objects data format and set disabled: true
on the item that you want to disable. To disable the entire component, use the disabled prop.
React node as label
You can use any React node as a label:
Color
By default, SegmentedControl uses theme.white with shadow in the light color scheme and var(--mantine-color-dark-6) background color for the indicator.
Set the color prop to change the indicator background-color:
Auto contrast
SegmentedControl supports autoContrast prop. If set to true, the label text color will automatically adjust
to ensure optimal contrast against the indicator background color:
Transitions
Change transition properties with:
transitionDuration– all transitions duration in ms,200by defaulttransitionTimingFunction– all transitions timing function,easeby default
readOnly
Set the readOnly prop to prevent the value from being changed:
Accessibility and usability
SegmentedControl uses radio inputs under the hood, so it is accessible by default with no extra steps required if you have text in labels.
The component supports the same keyboard events as a regular radio group.
If you do not have text in labels (for example, when you want to use SegmentedControl with icons only),
use VisuallyHidden to make the component accessible:
Source-backed parameter reference
Implementation signatures and types are generated from the pinned local source. Optional props, native inherited types, union branches and never exclusions are preserved. A forwardRef implementation's ref is a React reference, not an additional business prop.
