Tabs

Navigate related panels using native Tabs and Tab controls.

This guide covers Material UI Core with the default Emotion engine; extensions and additional demos are explicitly classified.

Use case and business boundary

Core requires host panel semantics; Lab TabContext/TabList/TabPanel are excluded. Hidden keep-mounted panels can still run effects.

Native composition and scope

Tabs, Tab, TabScrollButton

Preserve native Material UI composition and types; do not substitute JGuang UI/Base UI/Radix APIs. Example entries are not extra components.

Excluded integrations: TabContext (@mui/lab), TabList (@mui/lab), TabPanel (@mui/lab). Not claimed verified in the default Emotion environment.

Native installation and initialization

npm install @mui/material@9.4.0 @emotion/react@11.14.0 @emotion/styled@11.14.1

Use native npm and Emotion, not an invented JGuang UI Registry URL. Place examples inside native ThemeProvider; choose CssBaseline or ScopedCssBaseline for the project. Inspect React, existing providers, lockfile and SSR first. Never overwrite files or conceal peer conflicts. This batch verified React 19.2.8; React 18 and below require matching react-is. See the included bilingual setup guide.

Practical native parameters

These selected parameters are not a flattened universal API. Preserve the native declaring owner, slot structure, nullable values and generics.

Owner.propPractical roleDeclaration source
Tabs.valueControlled native value; its scalar/array/nullable type is owner-specific.Tabs
Tabs.onChangeOwning control's native callback; preserve its exact event/value/nullable signature.Tabs
Tabs.variantOwning native presentation enum; never substitute a universal variant prop.Tabs
Tabs.selectionFollowsFocusActivate Tabs on keyboard focus only if panel loading is immediate enough.Tabs
Tab.disabledNative disabled interaction state; not an authorization check.Tab

Runnable native examples

Machine keys select example entries, not universal variant props. Native demo JSX/data stay unchanged; JGuang-authored acceptance fixtures are explicitly labelled.

Explicitly unsupported additional examples

These remain in the upstream inventory, not silently skipped or presented as working previews. Additional dependency/framework acceptance is required.

Actual usage example

Unmodified pinned native demo; copy its required local helper files together.

import * as React from 'react';
import Tabs from '@mui/material/Tabs';
import Tab from '@mui/material/Tab';
import Box from '@mui/material/Box';

interface TabPanelProps {
  children?: React.ReactNode;
  index: number;
  value: number;
}

function CustomTabPanel(props: TabPanelProps) {
  const { children, value, index, ...other } = props;

  return (
    <div
      role="tabpanel"
      hidden={value !== index}
      tabIndex={0}
      id={`simple-tabpanel-${index}`}
      aria-labelledby={`simple-tab-${index}`}
      {...other}
    >
      {value === index && <Box sx={{ p: 3 }}>{children}</Box>}
    </div>
  );
}

function a11yProps(index: number) {
  return {
    id: `simple-tab-${index}`,
    'aria-controls': `simple-tabpanel-${index}`,
  };
}

export default function BasicTabs() {
  const [value, setValue] = React.useState(0);

  const handleChange = (event: React.SyntheticEvent, newValue: number) => {
    setValue(newValue);
  };

  return (
    <Box sx={{ width: '100%' }}>
      <Box sx={{ borderBottom: 1, borderColor: 'divider' }}>
        <Tabs value={value} onChange={handleChange} aria-label="basic tabs example">
          <Tab label="Item One" {...a11yProps(0)} />
          <Tab label="Item Two" {...a11yProps(1)} />
          <Tab label="Item Three" {...a11yProps(2)} />
        </Tabs>
      </Box>
      <CustomTabPanel value={value} index={0}>
        Item One
      </CustomTabPanel>
      <CustomTabPanel value={value} index={1}>
        Item Two
      </CustomTabPanel>
      <CustomTabPanel value={value} index={2}>
        Item Three
      </CustomTabPanel>
    </Box>
  );
}

Example dependency boundaries

react, @mui/material/Tabs, @mui/material/Tab, @mui/material/Box, @mui/material/TextField, @mui/material/styles, @mui/material/AppBar, @mui/material/Typography, @mui/icons-material/Phone, @mui/icons-material/Favorite, @mui/icons-material/PersonPin, @mui/icons-material/PhoneMissed

Direct Icons/System/Utils example imports require their matching 9.4.0 packages. Relative data/helpers are part of the example closure, not extra components. Remote images and simulated operations do not supply a backend.

Post-install acceptance

Run strict types, production build and real interactions. Check keyboard labels/focus, disabled/error/read-only semantics where natively supported, both themes, narrow screens and reduced motion. Verify callbacks against the real host data; do not declare installation complete from copying a prompt. Initialization fixtures also require server HTML and warning-free hydration.
